Cr. Val Schier - Mayor of Cairns Regional Council

I am the Mayor of the best region in the nation, without a doubt. And I love it! We've got two World Heritage areas - the reef and the rainfores, as well as places to cycle and walk and camp in. As well as the natural environment, we've a great choice of restaurants and exotic tropical fruits, and can go to the theatre, listen to live music, and indulge in all sorts of sporting activities. The best bits for me are the morning walks at Machans, breakfast on the balcony in a sarong, and drinks with friends at sunset. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Desley Boyle MP - Member for Cairns

Desley has been a Cairns local for over 30 years.  When she is away from Cairns she misses it dreadfully – an unfortunate by-product of the life of a politician.  Having been the Member for Cairns since 1998 and a Minister in the Queensland Government since 2004 (Local Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships portfolio) Desley previously worked as a psychologist, & was a councillor on Cairns City Council, as well as being active in many community & business organisations in Cairns & region.

Gavin King - Sunday Mail Journalist and Columnist

Gavin King started his writing career with music, art and culture street press publications in Sydney, becoming editor of weekly paper, Revolver, at the age 20. In 2003 he begain his mainstream newspaper career with News Limited paper The Centralian Advocate as its political reporter, later joining.The Cairns Post as business editor, and following that was appointed chief of staff.  His opinion column in The Weekend Post was loved and loathed in equal measure, and he has recently joined The Sunday Mail as its North Queensland correspondent, based in Cairns.

Jesse Kuch - Editor, Cairns Post’s TimeOUT and cairns.com.au/entertainment

Jesse is one of the young gun reporters at The Cairns Post, focussing on arts and entertainment.  He is    A long-time Cairns resident, Jesse is embedded in the local entertainment, art and live music scene both as spectator and participant, enjoying a successful musical career first in live bands and more recently as a DJ and label manager for internationally recognised Cairns dance label Open Records. Definitely not afraid to stay out late and party, Jesse is stoked to be part of the Festival Cairns Blogging Community.

Kier Shorey -  Breakfast Show presenter on ABC Far North (weekdays - 5am)

Kier was born and raised in Cairns but left to pursue an acting career, culminating in what The Courier Mail described as Brisbane’s Worst Play of 1990. He had better success as a screenwriter, with credits such as Neighbours, Pirate Islands and Crash Palace to his name. Kier also wrote and produced the short film Stop which screened in competition at Cannes, and co-wrote the feature film Blurred which earned him an AFI Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Simon Crerar - Cairns Post Online Editor

Simon Crerar is Online Editor at The Cairns Post, the local newspaper covering the city and Far North Queensland. Published continuously since 1888, the Post is the oldest business in Cairns, and currently employs 200 people.

A British journalist, Simon has worked as a reporter, commissioning and features editor on UK and Australian news, sport and arts desks. Before joining The Cairns Post, he was Arts & Entertainment editor at Times Online, the website of The Times and Sunday Times. He has reported from the Bafta Awards and the Cannes Film Festival, and created Sony Award-winning multimedia productions.
