2010 Cairns Festival Parade Application

The Cairns Festival Parade is an iconic creative celebration of our beautiful, diverse and extraordinary region.  The 2010 Festival Parade is scheduled for the 21 August at 6pm and will include over 50 floats and hundreds of participants.

The Festival Parade is a great opportunity to share with the community the pride you have in your club, group or organisation.  We warmly invite  all community groups to get involved and encourage the participation of our region's wonderful ethnic groups.  The Festival Parade is a unifying celebration for all, and it happens on the main streets of Cairns.

We have initiated some wacky and fun new elements to this year’s Parade and we are encouraging all participants to new creative heights.  Whether you want to make a recycling statement, cavort about the CBD as our creative and wonderful Mayor, or transform yourself into a never-before-seen being: Cairns Festival parade is your chance to be outrageous.  This is your chance to join with friends and neighbours and go wild. And for those of us who love to perform, the Festival Parade is the perfect platform for the bold and dramatic.

This year, our distinguished panel of judges will be awarding cash prizes to entrants that have excelled in creativity and originality. And our dynamic parade team will be available to help the development of your float or group participation leading up to 21 August.

There are many ways that you can engage in the 2010 Cairns Festival Parade spirit.  Basic details are listed below, and a complete participant packet is available from the Festival office or by clicking the above link.

INDIVIDUAL ENTRY

A new category for those wanting to show off their individual style and character: dress up, do your own thing, be the star of the parade. Release you inner Festival Freak and create your own Cairns Festival Parade persona. Walk, skip, ride, roller-skate your way down the Esplanade and go home with the top cash prize for our solo participants.

GROUP PARADE ELEMENT

This category is for groups, clubs, teams and organisations wanting to show off their identity and style. Perfect for...

Represent yourselves either as a Pedestrian Group  (No vehicles involved — ride, walk, skip, skate, dance, cartwheel your way down the street) or on a Float (Motorised Vehicle, Flat bed truck, etc).  We encourage participants to devise Parade Elements that do not require a motorised vehicle, but can assist with support for all types of floats.

OUR INITIATIVES

These are some ideas that Cairns Festival coordinators are developing to jazz up the parade and provide opportunities for people to get involved in fun, creative ways.See the below items and simply contact the Festival Team if you would like to get involved in any way.

Recycled Royals

A King and a Queen, celebrated by all in the parade, adorned with the most fabulous recycled garbage garb and adapted found objects.  The Royal Pair will be awarded and crowned due for their environmental sustainability ethic.  From their thrones on the official council float, these royals will encourage all subjects to protect and care for the Cairns around us! Multi-Val

Will the true Mayor please stand up!!! Celebrate Queensland's most creative civic leader, and transform yourself into Mayor Val for the Festival Parade. A dozen or more revelers will appear in the guise of our city's Mayor (she’s an awfully good sport, and a true champion of the arts and culture) to spread civic pride throughout the Parade. To join our parade as a Multi-Val, just contact Festival Parade Coordinator, Nerissa Brandenberger on 4044 3332 or by email. Click here for more information.

Chalk It Up

Help us colour the streets. This idea will invite people to put their designs around the parade route. Chalk will be provided and large groups of creative people will be invited to chalk it up before the parade.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Festival parade is looking for a few dozen creative people to serve as volunteers. Duties include workshop support, window display, stewards and marshals, pre-parade gloss up station, info tent, and other aspects. Please contact us if you are interested in helping the 2010 Cairns Festival Parade in any way. Click below to send us an email or parade query...
